ED and premature ejaculation are both common sexual dysfunctions that many men and people with penises suffer from. Erectile dysfunction drugs are effective in treating ED, but did you know that these drugs may also improve premature ejaculation? In this article, we will explain the relationship between erectile dysfunction drugs and premature ejaculation, including reports of clinical studies.

Premature Ejaculation Medication
The drug Dapoxetine (also known as Priligy) is well-known as a treatment for premature ejaculation and is approved in more than 50 countries around the world. However, due to certain regulations, it may be expensive or inaccessible in some areas, thus not all medical institutions can prescribe it.

Erectile Dysfunction Medication
Drugs such as vardenafil, sildenafil and tadalafil and their generic versions are well-known for treatment of erectile dysfunction, or ED, and are available at many medical institutions. There is also the possibility that these ED medications may also improve premature ejaculation.
Here we will take a look at some of the research findings.
Effects of Erectile Dysfunction Drugs on Premature Ejaculation
Numerous studies have been conducted regarding the effect of erectile dysfunction drugs on premature ejaculation. This time we will discuss a report on "Vardenafil" (product name "Levitra") [1].
In the study, 40 couples in which men had issues with premature ejaculation were divided into two groups, one group taking a 10 mg dose of Vardenafil (VAR group) (30 couples), and the other group taking a placebo (10 couples) before sexual intercourse. The duration of the treatment was 8 weeks, and the duration of vaginal penetration (intravaginal ejaculation latency time, IELT) was measured in each couple before and after treatment.

As a comparison, the results in intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) after 12 weeks use of dapoxetine, a component of the premature ejaculation treatment drug Priligy, was reported to be from 0.9 minutes at the start of treatment, to 2.8 minutes for 30 mg of dapoxetine and 3.3 minutes for 60 mg after treatment.[2] Compared to before starting the drug, intravaginal ejaculation latency time after 8 weeks in the VAR group showed a significant increase in vaginal penetration time (from 0.6 min at the start to 4.5 minutes after 8 weeks).
Due to differences in experimental conditions, it is not possible to make complete comparisons, but it can be suggested that vardenafil has an effect on improving premature ejaculation.
In this study, after taking the drug for 8 weeks, medications were switched between the VAR group and the placebo group, and the experiment was performed for another 4 weeks. When IELT was re-measured 4 weeks after the switch, significant prolongation of time (0.7 minutes → 2.0 minutes) was confirmed in the placebo group (who took 10 mg of vardenafil after switch). The VAR group (taking a placebo after replacement), saw penetration time decrease after the switch, however it was still significantly longer than before the study.
Based on the results, it can be said that vardenafil has an effect on prolonging IELT after being taken, and that its effect may persist even after a certain period of time has elapsed since the last dosage. However, the time that vardenafil affects the body is said to be several hours, the reason why the effects persisted much longer is unknown. One possible cause may be that once some patients experienced a longer penetration time, they may have become more accustomed to the duration.

In this study, the number of doses taken during the 8-week period varied from couple to couple due to the number of times the couples had sexual intercourse. However a positive correlation was observed between the number of doses and intravaginal ejaculation latency time at 8 weeks in the VAR group.
In summary, the study reported that taking 10 mg of vardenafil significantly improved penetration time in patients with premature ejaculation, and that the more frequently the drug was taken, the greater the improvement.
Why Premature Ejaculation Improves is Unclear
Although we presented a study conducted with vardenafil, other erectile dysfunction drugs, such as sildenafil and tadalafil, have also been known to improve premature ejaculation [3,4].
The mechanism of why these ED drugs improve premature ejaculation is not yet clear, but one possible reason includes the psychological relief of a sustained erection that these drugs provide. That, and the fact that increased hardness of the erection makes it more difficult for nerves in the penis to be stimulated.
Treatment of premature ejaculation with erectile dysfunction medication is not the conventional use of ED drugs. If you are interested in this treatment, please consult with a medical specialist first.
Improving Premature Ejaculation with Training
Rather than using medication for premature ejaculation, PE can can also be improved with training. You can learn how to control ejaculation by manipulating your pelvic floor muscles while masturbating with special items.
Unlike taking medication, PE training takes time and effort. But once you master and maintain it, the effects can be long-lasting with no side effects.
